Do you know a lot of homophobes or something?

Recently, someone asked why I share (so much) Pride content on Social Media. "I wouldn’t think any of your friends would need to see multiple posts."

Uhh...

After my shock wore off, their response was actually a good reminder about why it's important to share this content. My posts aren't necessarily for me, maybe not even for my friends... or maybe they are? Maybe I have a friend who is struggling and needs to know that I am a safe person. Maybe they have a family member who is confused and my post helps them bridge a gap. Maybe they share to let THEIR friends know they are a safe person. Maybe a parent finally understands, after seeing one of my posts, and they find mutual ground with their child. How awesome to help bring people together!

Regardless, it doesn't really matter why because it helps and it's important to support equality for every human. Clearly, there are many who still don't understand the importance of showing support for the LGBTQIA2S+ community so let's explore the reasons we need to shout pride love from the rooftops (regardless of your audience).

Why (so much) pride content?

For starters, June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate the LGBTQIA2S+ community, to honour their history and struggles, and to support their pursuit for equality. Sharing Pride content now, and throughout the year, is essential for moving the line forward and encouraging a more inclusive and enlightened society. Amplifying Pride content is vital and much more than simply celebrating.

1. Visibility and Representation

When Pride content is shared, LGBTQ+ individuals see themselves represented in media, social networks, and everyday conversations. Visibility is paramount and particularly crucial for those in environments where acceptance may be scarce. Seeing themselves reflected in the stories and achievements of others can foster a sense of belonging and self-worth. It tells LGBTQIA2S+ individuals that they are not alone, that their experiences are valid, and that their identities are respected.

Representation also helps break down stereotypes and misconceptions. By showcasing the diverse experiences and identities within the LGBTQIA2S+ community, we challenge narrow perceptions and broaden the understanding of what it means to be LGBTQIA2S+. This representation can inspire future generations to embrace their true selves without fear of prejudice.

"Never going to stop saying it – no matter one's preferences, origins, skin colour or beliefs, we are ALL human. We all deserve love and understanding. We are BETTER TOGETHER so be kind, there is no other way." ~ Cheeky Pebble

2. Education and Awareness

Pride content is a powerful tool to inform, educate, and foster empathy and understanding. Pride month is an important platform to share the rich history of the LGBTQIA2S+ rights movement. By sharing historical facts, experiences and stories, we can highlight the progress made and the many challenges that still remain. Many people are unaware of the issues faced by this community but when they learn about the hardships and injustices, they are more likely to empathize and support their rights. This awareness is crucial in combating, ignorance and prejudice, laying the groundwork for a more accepting and inclusive society.

3. Support and Solidarity

Sharing Pride content is a profound gesture of support and solidarity. It sends a powerful message to LGBTQIA2S+ individuals that they are seen, valued, and loved. This support can be particularly vital for those who are facing discrimination, rejection, or internal conflicts about their identity. Knowing that there is a community of allies who support them can provide comfort and hope.

Solidarity also strengthens the community by uniting allies and LGBTQIA2S+ individuals in a common cause. It demonstrates that the fight for equality is not just the responsibility of LGBTQIA2S+ people but a collective effort that requires the support of everyone. This unity can amplify voices and bolster advocacy efforts.

4. Advocacy and Change

Pride is not just a celebration; it's a call to action. Sharing Pride can amplify advocacy efforts by drawing attention to the injustices faced by the LGBTQIA2S+ community. This includes critical issues such as legal rights, mental health and anti-discrimination policies. By raising awareness, we can mobilize support and encourage others to join the fight for equality. Highlighting these issues can drive meaningful change by educating and influencing public opinion and policy. The more voices that are raised in support, the stronger the push for legislative and societal changes that protect and uplift LGBTQIA2S+ individuals.

5. Celebrating Diversity

Pride content celebrates the beauty of diversity and promotes the idea that our differences should be welcomed, not merely tolerated. It reminds us that love, identity, and expression come in many shapes and forms and they enrich our communities. Celebrating diversity encourages a culture of acceptance and inclusivity, where everyone is free to express their true selves without fear or judgment. By embracing and sharing our unique differences, we contribute to a more inclusive and vibrant society.

6. Everyone Benefits

Sharing Pride content goes beyond a mere display of support; it is a crucial step towards fostering a more inclusive, educated, and compassionate world. Whether through a heartfelt social media post, an informative article, or simply displaying a rainbow flag, every piece of shared content plays a part in building a society where everyone can live authentically and proudly. Spreading pride helps create a world where diversity is celebrated and everyone has the freedom to be themselves. At the end of the day, we are ALL human so let’s share love and kindness, and work together to create a brighter, more inclusive future for every human.
